What are porcelain veneers?
Porcelain veneers are thin, custom-made shells of dental porcelain that are placed over the front of your teeth to improve their appearance. They can be color-matched to the shade of your natural teeth, and they mimic the translucent properties of tooth enamel, ensuring beautiful, natural looking results that blend in seamlessly with your smile.
What issues do porcelain veneers correct?
Porcelain veneers can be used to correct a wide range of cosmetic imperfections with your smile. The most common issues include:
- Teeth with gaps
- Uneven teeth
- Crooked teeth
- Chipped or cracked teeth
- Teeth that are worn down
- Discolored teeth
- Irregularly sized or shaped teeth
Due to their versatility, Dr. Bass often recommends porcelain veneers as part of a smile makeover.
What are the advantages of porcelain veneers?
Porcelain veneers provide many benefits, including:
- Customized procedure that addresses your unique smile makeover goals
- Versatile restoration that corrects a wide range of cosmetic issues with your smile
- Minimally invasive procedure that is completed in 2-3 office visits
- Achieves beautiful, natural looking results
- Provides durable, long lasting results
- Resistant to staining, ensuring a bright smile for years to come
- Can address multiple cosmetic flaws with your smile in one convenient procedure
- Restores strength and functionality to your teeth
- Allows you to smile with greater confidence
What are the disadvantages of porcelain veneers?
Some personal habits, like clenching or grinding the teeth, may cause veneers to chip or fall off, and they are not a good option for people with severely decayed teeth. Dr. Bass will go over all of your options for perfecting your smile during your initial consultation to ensure you undergo the right treatment for your unique needs.
Do porcelain veneers take a long time to place?
Porcelain veneers are placed over three office visits. During your initial visit, Dr. Bass will show you your options, and the perfect match for your teeth will be picked. On the second visit, teeth are prepared for the veneers, an impression is taken for your new teeth, and you will be fitted with temporary veneers. Your new porcelain veneers will be placed during your third visit.
How long do porcelain veneers last?
In general, you can expect your veneers to last at least ten years. With proper care, they can potentially last even longer. However, if you grind your teeth, chew on hard substances or fail to maintain good oral hygiene habits, it may cause your veneers to wear out sooner.
In the event that your porcelain veneers become chipped, cracked, or otherwise damaged, new veneers can easily be placed by Dr. Bass.
Will I need to take special care of my veneers?
Porcelain veneers are as easy to take care of as your natural teeth. Proper oral hygiene like brushing and flossing will be all the care they require.
Will my porcelain veneers look natural?
Thanks to Dr. Bass’ LVI training and extensive cosmetic dentistry background, he is able to design and place porcelain veneers with expert skill. The primary goal is to deliver veneers that look natural and feel comfortable. Dr. Bass will always take the time necessary to ensure you achieve beautiful results.
Why is porcelain the best material for veneers?
Dr. Bass prefers porcelain over any other tooth-colored veneer material for several reasons:
- Porcelain is a high-quality material that we feel gives our patients the very best results, both functionally and aesthetically.
- Dental porcelain can be easily handcrafted to fit your unique specifications, and the thin veneers look just like natural teeth once they are placed.
- Porcelain is also strong, durable, attractive, and can last for many years with good care.
Can I bite normally with porcelain veneers?
Porcelain veneers are very thin, but when bonded to your natural teeth, they become extremely strong and able to withstand excessive biting forces. After your veneers are placed, you will be able to eat whatever foods you want. However, like natural teeth, porcelain veneers can break or chip if not properly cared for. It is important that you avoid chewing on hard substances such as ice, pens or pencils, and you must be careful when eating very hard or sticky foods such as candy.
What alternative treatments are available?
Porcelain veneers are a popular choice because they can correct several issues simultaneously. Your ideal treatment will depend on what cosmetic issues you are trying to correct. If achieving a brighter smile is your main goal, you may want to consider advanced laser teeth whitening. If you have minor chips or cracks, dental bonding is a good alternative.
Porcelain fillings are effective for tooth decay, and dental crowns help strengthen weakened or damaged teeth. After a thorough evaluation, Dr. Bass can review all your options and help you choose one that works best for your needs and goals.
