When Should I Take My Child to the Dentist?
Edmond, Lawton, Norman, and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
The American Academy of Pediatric dentistry recommends a child make his or her initial visit to a dentist soon after the first tooth appears, or no later than the child's first birthday.
Oklahoma City dentist Dr. Terry Bass welcomes children for their first dental check-ups, an experience that is equally important for parents. Early general dentistry exams provide a good foundation for the prevention of potential future problems such as tooth decay and periodontal disease.
A child's first visit to the dentist typically involves an evaluation of the budding baby teeth and is geared largely toward helping the child adjust to the sensations of the dentist's office. In some cases, early check-ups can help diagnose and outline a future course of treatment for bite conditions or oral diseases.
This first exam also focuses on helping parents introduce good oral hygiene habits. Dr. Bass can demonstrate how to properly clean your child's teeth and outline a healthy dental hygiene routine.
During your child's first check-up, you can also discuss the prevention of potentially harmful oral habits such as thumb sucking or pacifier use.
If you live in the Edmond or Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, areas and your child is ready for his or her first check-up, please contact the office of family dentist Dr. Terry Bass.
