Dental Implants and Dentures

Edmond, Lawton, Norman, and Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

No one wishes to lose teeth, but unfortunately many circumstances can lead to tooth loss, especially as you grow older. Diligent oral hygiene and regular professional dental care greatly reduces the likelihood that you will lose all of your teeth, but at some point many of us will face the decision of how best to replace a missing tooth or teeth. In Oklahoma, Dr. Terry Bass and his staff can provide an extensive evaluation to help with this decision.

Traditional Dentures

When you think about replacing lost teeth, the first thing to occur to you will probably be traditional dentures. Custom made, removable dentures have been in use for hundreds of years, and are still a common tooth replacement solution.

Although technological advancement has greatly improved the comfort, durability and appearance of removable dentures, they still present several disadvantages, including:

  • Dentures can shift in the mouth, causing discomfort and embarrassment
  • Dentures can fall out if they are not properly fitted and maintained
  • Dentures must be replaced or altered on a regular basis
  • Long term denture wear leads to bone loss in the jaw
  • Dentures must be removed to be cleaned

With regular check ups and occasional adjustments, dentures can be kept comfortable for a long time, but in some cases the cost of adjustments leads denture wearers to avoid this necessary element of denture maintenance. As a result, they are faced with ill-fitting dentures that lead to long-term discomfort.

Dental Implants

Dental implants offer a permanent solution to tooth loss. Implants can be used to replace one tooth or all of your teeth if necessary. Advantages of dental implants over dentures include:

  • Dental implants are permanent
  • Implants do not move in the mouth
  • Implants do not have to be removed for cleaning
  • Implants stimulate bone growth in the jaw, preventing long term tissue loss

Dental implants are placed in two stages. First, a titanium replacement tooth root is implanted directly into the jaw. After a sufficient healing interval, usually several months, a custom made prosthetic tooth is attached to the implant. Patients who receive dental implants must be in good overall health. In addition, Dr. Bass will evaluate the structure of your jaw to ensure there is enough bone to support the implants.
