Types of Dental Crowns

Proudly Serving Patients in Oklahoma City, Edmond, Norman & nearby areas of Oklahoma

Dental crowns are an effective solution to cracked, chipped, and otherwise damaged teeth. Crowns not only improve the look of your smile, but also restore strength and functionality to your bite.

Dental crowns can be custom-made using a variety of advanced materials – including metal, ceramic, and porcelain – and each come with different advantages. During a consultation at our Edmond area office, Dr. Terry Bass can discuss which type of tooth crown might be right for you. Call 405-848-7780 today.

All-Porcelain Dental Crowns

For patients who want the most natural-looking crown available, all-porcelain dental crowns are the obvious choice. Natural teeth reflect light with a certain translucency that other types of dental crowns struggle to mimic. All-porcelain crowns are capable of achieving this realistic effect, making your crown virtually indistinguishable from the rest of your natural teeth.

Once a porcelain crown is properly bonded, it is strong and fracture-resistant. Porcelain is also stain-resistant, helping your new crown stay beautiful over a long period of time. All-porcelain dental crowns are a good choice for front teeth that need to be restored; however, if you need to place a crown on a back tooth, porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns are stronger and will more easily withstand the hefty biting and chewing forces your jaw can generate.

Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal Dental Crowns

A porcelain-fused-to-metal crown (PFM) uses a hybrid of materials to create an especially strong dental crown. The portion of the crown that directly rests on your tooth is made of a thin metal alloy, which allows for a more precise fit and a stronger restoration. The tooth-shaped part of the crown is formed using high-quality porcelain, giving the crown an appropriately tooth-like coloration.

PFM crowns do not have the same translucent effect as all-porcelain dental crowns, since the metal shell prevents light from being reflected in a lifelike manner. However, these crowns are ideal when replacing back teeth, since these teeth generally not do not catch the light when you smile, and are less exposed overall. Additionally, the strength of PFM crowns makes them especially durable and resistant to the chewing pressure generated on your back teeth.

Lava™ Dental Crowns

Lava™ crowns are an innovative type of all-ceramic dental crown that uses shaded zirconia on the interior surface for maximum strength and a precision fit. Lava™ dental crowns are just as strong as porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns, but with a superior aesthetic quality. The zirconia framework of Lava™ crowns is colored to match the precise color of your surrounding teeth and milled to a custom fit. Fine layers of ceramic veneer are then applied to the zirconia shell, allowing the Lava crown to imitate both the color and translucency of your natural teeth beautifully.
