A properly functioning temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is necessary for a vast number of basic functions. This flexible joint allows for all movement in the jaw; from talking, to chewing, and even to yawning, it is vital that this joint be in working order.

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) encompass any malfunctioning of the TMJ. This can include limited movement in the mouth, and complete lockjaw, but can also cause ear and headaches, sore muscles in the neck, shoulder, and back, and even nausea. Some symptoms of TMD are similar to those of other ailments. It is important to have an experienced neuromuscular dentists assess your symptoms and determine if they are indeed due to TMD.

TMD can be caused by trauma to the TMJ from an accident, or through habits like grinding the teeth. Symptoms range from mild to severe, but left untreated, TMD can have long-lasting, painful consequences.

There are a number of treatment options for TMD, ranging from simple procedures like mouthguards and tooth recontouring, to more in-depth surgical and orthodontic procedures. Our goal is to permanently fix TMD, and as such, the procedure best suited to your needs will be determined and implemented.
